Each year at Host we nominate three charities for our residents to vote to support through the #HostEnvironmentalPledge. The campaign encourages responsible behaviour from Host and our residents to drive sustainability across each Host location throughout the UK and Ireland. For 2020/21 one of our nominated Charities is Planet Patrol; a community movement on a mission to eliminate single-use materials and litters from our communities.

Planet Patrol compiles a report of litter found around the world. Planet Patrol volunteers have recorded over 310,000 pieces of litter across 83 countries in the past three years on the free Planet Patrol app.

To support this work, we encourage you to take on the #5PieceChallenge; nope not a KFC feast but a way for you to help clean up your local community and help record and map the problem with litter globally.

In 2020, 1,243 brands were recorded with Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Budweiser, Cadbury and Walkers found to be the top five polluting brands.

The #5PieceChallenge.

When you download the app, you can participate in the #5pieceChallenge. All you have to do is:

  1. Follow Planet Patrol on Instagram – onplanetpatrol
  2. Head outside for your daily walk and as you do so pick up at least 5 pieces of litter.
  3. Record the litter on the app, making sure to record the brands.
  4. Share a photo of yourself with the recorded 5 pieces of litter on Instagram. And nominate 5 of your friends to also take on the challenge.
  5. With the photo you should use the following caption:
Take 5. Nominate 5. Record 5 pieces of litter in the @onplanetpatrol app. It’s more than just litter picking – you’re contributing to powerful global research into offending brands to help stop litter polluting the planet!
  6. And that’s it.

As Planet Patrol says, individual actions can ripple across the world with the power of social media. Simply by sharing a photo and tagging 5 others to take on the challenge you can create a huge wave of change.
